advances to the world series. cbs 5 reporter mike sugarman has more on the buzz around the ballpark. >> reporter: ann, this is it. this is the league championship series that baseball's final four is what you play for all year for fans too. 43,000 have crammed into at&t park. they're bringing their spirit and they're bringing a lot of money. >> sunflower seeds, peanuts, sodas, $1. >> reporter: that's a bargain. >> how much do you think you're going to drop tonight? >> money-wise? >> reporter: yeah. >> probably -- $600. >> the tickets were $150. and we brought some snacks. >> reporter: is this a big seller? >> yeah the giants' fest, everyone loves them. get a beer and drink with the fist. if you get mad at your friends or your wife. >> reporter: president? how do you think he'd handle the afghani crisis? >> he's a team player, i think he'd look out for all of us. >> literally just came to town

ballpark mike. >> reporter: i don't mike that kind -- make that kind of dough. and on the east coast, the yankees dropped two in a row detroit beats new york again in the american league championship series. the tigers winning on the road today 3-0. and taking their two game lead back home. dennis o'donnell will have all the highlights coming up in sports. it was more than 17 hours late but tonight endeavour has finally arrived at the new permanent home in los angeles. the excursion was extended because of a number of problems. cbs 5 reporter jeff win shows us the reception. >> reporter: in her last few yards entering the science center endeavour gingerly brushed above a fence alone the lane and sidestepped this tree. madison and sydney got to witness the long awaited homecoming. >> i think that it's really cool. and it's bigger than i expected. >> reporter: the girls came to exposition park this morning after younger sister sydney saw

coverage yesterday. >> i said to mommy can we go to the space shuttle tomorrow? and she said yes. and why i want to go here is because it's my first time to see one. [ applause ] >> reporter: city leaders and joint managers from the science center to walk arm in arm with the shuttle making her way to her final resting place after a 12-mile trek from l. a. x. through different neighborhoods in los angeles and edgablewood. >> we went through some pretty tough streets of los angeles. and everybody was just universally enthusiastic. >> reporter: enthusiastic despite arriving a half day late. >> time was not the critical factor, safety was. and with the huge crowds we have that slowed us down some. >> reporter: it's estimates one million people lined the route which has been compared to a slow moving parade. as i spoke to people who gathered along the streets, i saw the real gift. >> of the endeavour. the gift of inspiration. >> ever since i've heard about the final mission for the

shuttle. i've -- been thinking ability being an astronaut when i grow up. >> reporter: even though endeavour took her time to get here she's inspired kids like madison to shoot for the stars. >> that was jeff winn reporting. well, san francisco's police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting in the early morning and a police standoff. from 7:00 this morning several shots were fired near the intersection of eddy and webster streets. officers found blood and bullet casings prompting them to go into a nearby home for roughly four hours. the occupants were ordered out of the home. several adults and four children came out and police then arrested a 28-year-old man described as a possible shooting suspect. a gun was not found in the home and it's not clear whether the blood is related to the shots fired. a 56-year-old woman is in custody in san jose accused in a series of arsons. the string of suspicious fires like this one last week began in september and last night,

investigators staking out the area say they caught the woman in the act of setting a large garbage can on fire. last night's fire was the 11th in 18 days. all along dellman manor lane in the burbank district. gas prices in california are still high. but they are coming down a bit. here's a look at the current average for a gallon of regular in our local metro areas. it's $4.56 in san jose. $4.60 in oakland and the highest is in san francisco, $4.64. gasbuddy.com says these prices are six to 11 cents less than they were just a week ago. and to find the cheapest gas prices in your area, check out the pump patrol on our website. cbssf.com. no matter where you fill up in california, it's going to cost you and a cbs 5 reporter anne makovec explains the courts may decide where prices go next. >> reporter: when it comes to the gas price roller coaster,

california is always riding high. >> i just think it's a ripoff. >> reporter: in some experts warn it could get worse because of increased environmental regulations. the state's low carbon fuel standard forces fuel producers to lower the carbon intensity of their gas 10% by 2020. they can do so by adding biofuels like ethanol made from corn, grass or woody plants but supplies are tight which could make the special fuel more expensive to produce. >> oil is still believe it or not cheap. >> reporter: frank directs a program on energy and sustainable development at stanford and studies biofuel feasibility. >> you have to break that down and that's a far you know more complicated if you like in energy intensive process to essentially get to the ultimate product that you want. >> reporter: which could produce more carbon and make it more expensive. last year a judge blocked the new standard for california gas saying it interferes with interstate commerce. but now that ruling is going to

the ninth circuit court of appeals on tuesday. the case focus is on how gas is to be rated and ranked under the new system. they say supplies of biofuel will grow with time eventually making us less dependent on foreign oil. >> that's a bet and no one knows how it's going to resolve. >> reporter: a lot of drivers hone no one is gambling on their dime. >> i'm all for making the environment more friendly but you need to be reasonable about it. >> i think this adds on to our american struggle and i think it's a poor judgment to hike up prices right now. >> reporter: in california, anne makovec, cbs 5 early edition. for 40 years arlen specter was an outspoken politician who drew the ire of his fellow republicans as well as his fellow democrats. tonight colleagues are remembering senator specter, will died today at the age of

-- he died today at the age of 82. >> i admired the fact that he never gave up. >> never a hint of scandal and he always said what he wanted. he was a great politicians but i think he'll be remembered for being an honorable man and an honorable public servant. >> specter died from complications of nonhodgkin's lymphoma. he started the senate career as a republican in 1980 before switching parties three years ago. the move cost him re-election and specter left office in january 2011. not quite a world record but he's safe back on earth. watch as a sky diver makes a death-defying jump 24 miles up and hurdles to land faster than anyone in a free fall. there are still a few lingering clouds out the door right now but overrule what a great october day. how hot are we going to get? a look at your seven day forecast is coming up.

after days of this really is incredible. an austrian man has become the

first sky diver to break the sound barrier. the supersonic free fall this afternoon was successful in the eyes over new mexico. cbs reporter bigad shaban shows us the glitches that almost derailed the sun from the earth's stratosphere. >> reporter: this is what it looks like to break the speed of sound. cameras went along for the ride as felix baumgartner from austria sky dived from the edge of space. 24 miles above new mexico. >> when i was standing there, on top of the world, you become so humble. you do not think about breaking records anymore. you want to come back alive. >> reporter: baumgartner wore a specialized space suit and absolutelied before jumping -- saluted before jumping from a pressurized capsule. within seconds he was flying at speeds over 833 miles per hour. and the times seemed to spin out of control. >> that spin became so violent, over all excess -- it was hard to know how to get out of that spin. >> reporter: baumgartner was able to reach such great heights thanks to the 55 story

regional qualifier for a larger competition. there you have it all the signs of fall and yet it's feeling more and more like summer. elizabeth winger is here. >> it's really going to feel a lot like summer by about middle of the week. yeah we could see our last real heat wave of the season. if you like hot weather enjoy it. so yeah temperatures out the door still kind of on the mild side. we saw a lot of 60s and 70s around the bay area today. and check out concord still coming in at 77 degrees. similar story in santa rosa. san francisco right now in the low to mid-60s. plenty blue skies. by later on tonight the biggest story? fog. it's really going to roll in overnight. could even impact the monday morning commute. could cause some flight delays. temperatures mainly going to be in the mid 50s. so all that should burn off by tomorrow afternoon. and yes we are going to see sunshine and temperatures are going to be maybe a tick above what we saw today. maybe by a degree or two. so we're going to see soft 60s and 70s around the coast and bay and some more 80s especially in the inland spots. so yea it's going to feel hot

east of the oakland hills. here's a look the satellite and they door -- look at the satellite and radar. we are watching a low pressure system. for us here in the bay area it's high pressure leaving us high and nice and dry. we're out the course of the week and yes we are going to see that heat wave. by about the middle of the workweek. pinpoint forecast, so your highs over -- your overnight lows rather are mainly in the 50s. it's going to feel relatively typical for that time of the year. 53 in livermore. 54 in concord and a cooler 50 degrees in santa row sea. for tomorrow's -- rowasa. for tomorrow's highs in concord, livermore and fairfield mid 70s around the bay. 84 or -- 74 rather in oakland. the forecast over the next several days looks like this. that warming trend continues tuesday and wednesday. and wednesday is going to be one of our hottest days. you'll notice the inland spots reaching to the low 90s. we're also going to see an increase in the winds especially in the north and east bay hills.

year's nfc championship, the 49ers made several r after losing to the new york giants in last year's nfc championship the 49ers made several roster upgrades. the question was, was it enough to make a difference in the rematch? smith the top rated paster against eli manning. up 3-0. second quarter when manning hits cruz in the back of the end zone. giants take a 7-3 lead and the salsa hit and full stride. 13 seconds left in the half and lawrence tines 40-yard attempt is blocked. by terrell brown. but -- it would just get worse. amazingly the 49ers got into field goal range but david angers misses from -- david akers misss from 52. trailing 10-3 at the half. first drive second half. ahmad bradshaw leaps into the

end zone. new york up 17-3. alex smith had the worst game of the season. worst game in two years. (ed three times, intercepted three times, twice by antrel rolle. it's the first time in two years that smith threw multiple interceptions in the same game. giants beat up the 49ers 26-3. san francisco now 4-2. >> i didn't feel flat. i don't know about that. i mean it's -- tough to get up when you're not -- you know when you're not executing. i think that's -- i mean what comes first you know. i didn't feel flat to be in the game. i don't think anybody did. more of a sense of you know when things aren't going well i mean it's tough. you're grinding and you're trying to go out there and make things happen and it's not working and you're not playing well, it's not easy to be up. >> yeah they better fix it. they have a game thursday night. the 1-3 raiders were on the road to face the undefeated atlanta falcons are off to the best start in franchise history. not on the field with a

third quarter, kickoff taking eight yards deep. excuse me the patriots new england tom brady goes for wes welker, 46-yard touchdown new england up 17-3. in the fourth but seattle got some home field magic. look at that. russell wilson to sydney rice. 46-yard touchdown and the seahawks win 24-23. now give me the ravens and cowboys. third quarter kickoff, taken eight yards deep by jacoby jones, fast but still fast -- not this fast. but he did go 108 yards for the touchdown. tying the nfl record for longest kick return. ravens up 24-13. fourth quarter, cowboys from 51 yards out. dan bailey? no and the ravens hang on. 31-29. baseball, yankees looking to bounce back in game two of the alcs. versus the tigers. but anibal sanchez dealing and struck out jayson nix to end the 7th. sanchez seven shutout innings.
